Dr. Carolina Bonilla is Board Certified in Adult and Geriatric Psychiatry. Her areas of expertise include late-life depression, grief, and treatment-resistant depression.
From an early age, Dr. Bonilla was keenly interested in human behavior and in neuroscience, and determined to pursue a career in psychiatry. Through her work with geriatric patients, she developed a holistic approach that integrates physical, social, and medical aspects of health. She prides herself on working closely with each patient and creating a treatment plan that considers the patient’s personal goals, values and specific medical and social conditions to treat their mental health conditions. She helps patients make meaningful changes in their lives that enable them to recover and thrive.
A native of Colombia, Dr. Bonilla is fluent in Spanish and particularly knowledgeable about women’s issues and Latin America. She has a deep appreciation and respect for other cultures, and has worked with patients from many other ethnic, religious and cultural backgrounds.
Dr. Bonilla enjoys spending time with her family, hiking and cooking. She has always been very passionate about nutrition and since having children, she likes to create healthy vegetable recipes that her kids appreciate too.

Dr. Bonilla earned her medical degree from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana School of Medicine, Bogotá, Colombia. She completed a General Psychiatry Residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, where she served as Assistant Chief Resident, and a Geriatric Psychiatry Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, Western Psychiatric Institute in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Dr. Bonilla has been practicing since 2008. She began her career at Sutter Center for Psychiatry as part of a multidisciplinary team, treating adults and older adults who required hospitalization. Her contributions to the hospital and her patients were recognized with the James Margolis Award of Excellence in Clinical Practice in 2010.
Dr. Bonilla left the hospital to provide care for adults and older adults on an outpatient basis in 2011, practiced in a variety of settings including Baylor-Scott and White Healthcare in Round Rock, Texas, Community Psychiatry Associates in Folsom, and the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation in Sacramento. She obtained her TMS certification in 2012 and joined TMS Health Solutions in 2014.
